Hi from Spain!
Hi everyone!
My name's Daniel and I'm from Seville (the most beautiful city in Spain )
I'm 24 and I keep snakes and some geckos since I was 18.
I was looking for some information about the reptile hobby in Au because I'm going to go to Sydney at the middle of July for a minimum of six months and I would like to learn more from all of you and your amazing animals. I donīt want to buy nothing just learn a lot.
In Spain (and I'm sure the entire world too) we love the australian reptiles and I know a very enthusiastic australian gecko breeders who wants to learn more and more about your animals and the same thing for the snakes.
It's a sad moment for me now because I have to sell my ball python collection because I would like to stay in Au for a while but I know that it will be an excellent opportunity for me to study and work there so...there I go!
I hope you can help me with my questions and I hope I can help you if you have any question about the reptile (exotics in general) hobby in Europe
A couple of pictures
Cheers!
Dani
Ps: I really sorry for my english

Hi Dani,
English is fine, although it sounds like you may have been influenced by a Londoner!
Welcome and I'm sure you will enjoy your time here. You will be arriving mid winter so bring some woollens. I suggest you make your way to the Australian Herpetological Society. Next meeting 28/7/10 at the Australian Museum to meet some like minded people.

Hahaha That's because we learn british english at school, uni...we don't have another influence near here and believe me when I said that I prefer a Londoner influence better than Welsh ones haha
Anyway I think that my first months there will be interest/difficult/funny

Well glad to say there's nofthin wrong with London English. Bit partial to it myself. If you make it to the next AHS I'll be the guy next to lots of bags of smelly insects.

Welcome Daniel. Your pythons and gecko are good looking animals.
It's unfortunate that you have to give up your animals to come over here. I suppose that this is because you don't have anyone willing to look after them while you're over here. Is that right?
By the way, your written English is good. In fact, it's better than many Australians whose first language is English (at least better than most of the people who post on reptile forums anyway!)
Spongebob, how could you tell that Daniel's English was influenced by a Londoner? Are you a linguist or something? Seriously, what indicates such a specific influence as this?
P.S - Daniel, you would have to give up any reptiles that you did happen to buy over here anyway, as legal exporting of wildlife is extremely prohibitive.

I knew that before but i'm reading the forum looking for more information about that. I want to know more about the australian hobby i love the way you love and protect your animals
Here you can see a Salamandra S. that my brothers and i rescued from a highway. After a couple of days he comes back home. I think it's one of our most beautiful native animals (all native animals from Spain are protected too)

You're welcome Daniel.
I imagine that you'd be able to get a reptile licence just like us while you were staying here though (however, I'm not sure about this). I don't know if you need to be an Australian citizen or not to get a reptile keepers licence or if there's restrictions like a minimum time needed for temporary residents before they can legally acquire herps to keep etc.
That's a beautiful salamander Daniel. What species is it? (please include the latin name).

Thanks for the information but I don't want to keep any animal at the moment.
It's interesting..so all of you have a licence to keep your animals?
It's the same licence if you want to breed?

The latin name is Salamandra Salamandra Morenica (maybe S.S. Longirostris).
We normally use the latin/scientist name and you the common names so I have to learn now all the Australian common names to identify the posts and the animals you talking about. I can do it...maybe I'll spend months but..haha

The huge majority of reptile keepers in Oz are licenced these days. It's fairly cheap and easy, so there are not many good reasons not to have a licence. Those that don't have a licence are generally those that irresponsibly keep exotics illegally (which is becoming a problem) and those that have been disqualified due to illegal trading etc. Of course there's also those that are just plain forgetful and have let their licence expire. I'm sure that there's also those that don't trust the sometimes overzealous authorities, so don't even put themselves on their radar!
Yes, it's the same licence to keep as it is to breed.

Thanks for the scientific names. I wish that many more Aussies used these, as there's often much confusion when people use common names, which often change from region to region.

Haha I understand
In Spain we don't need any licence but you can have one if you have a minimum of animals. It's advantageous when you breed a considerable number of animals. Maybe this situation will change in the next 3-4 years and it will be obligatory anyway.
